About Our Mala Store Products

Om Couture Designs makes dharma tools for spiritual practice. We specialize in unique gemstones, shells, natural seeds, and other materials, often using art as a representation of the mala intention. Malas are generally hand-knotted but we have a line of malas with the ability to stretch and shape around the wrist. Many have an additional “power” stone for further spiritual intention and influence. Malas, also known as rosaries, have been used for centuries in all faiths to help with counting prayers. The design of each mala sets an intention and will resonate with your personal purpose and aspirations. Each mala is spiritually cleansed upon purchase and blessed by a monastic.

We have created a line of photography that can be used for spiritual imagery or focus in your meditation or just “hung” on a wall because you resonate with the imagery, as we did when we photographed the image. Photography can be customized to size and framed.

Our altars are a new addition and are crafted from reclaimed wood, sanded, and treated to withstand normal wear and tear. We love them and know you will, too. We have collected unique offering bowls and incense burners in our travels and offer them to help create a perfect urban alter in your home.

Cathie DuChene, our store visionary, and the rest of our artistic creators, wholeheartedly work on our crafts with the intention to help others enhance or gain a more mindful life. We serve a wide range of individuals starting right from the young child.

Information About Om Couture Designs’ Owner

Cathie DuChene is a designer, artist, dowser, rock and gemstone enthusiast, and a practicing Buddhist. When she first started a dharma practice, chanting mantras became an integral part of the practice. These mantras naturally led into creating designs of a mala that were spiritually supportive. The more individualized the mala, the more meaningful moments started appearing, reaffirming the true power of the recitation for recipients. Mala beads have become something she could share with others through setting an intention of love, healing, protection, and compassion in the making of each set of beads. The creatively designed malas were influenced by many requests for custom stones and helping to meet challenges of light and energy workers, working women and men, and protections for spiritual practitioners including monastics. With each mala personally created, there is a sense of giving and compassion that is very fulfilling for each person who comes in contact with the mala as well as the vibrations and prayers imbued into the string of beads.

Origin of Om Couture Designs’ Name

Meaning of Om

The name Om Couture Designs comes from the Om symbol of universality and entire consciousness, Om, also written as Aum, is a mystical and sacred syllable that originated from Hinduism but is now common to Western yoga practitioners as well as Hindi, Buddhists, etc.

According to the Hindu Mandukya Upanishad, which is entirely devoted to the explanation of the syllable, "Om” is the one eternal syllable of which all that exists is but the development. The past, the present, and the future are all included in this one sound, and all that exists beyond the three forms of time is also implied in it. Although Om symbolizes the most profound concepts of universal creation including the three stages of existence (birth, life, and death), it is in use daily. The devout begin their day, work, prayers, or journey by uttering Om, the symbol is enshrined in every Hindu temple and it is often found at the head of letters and at the beginning of important documents. Many wear the sign of Om as a pendant, and it is the first syllable of the sacred mantra "Om mani padme hum."

Meaning of Couture

My grandmother, Mary Rosa Isabelle DuChene nee Couture was a woman to be reckoned with. Isabelle was a little French woman who was always appropriately coifed and dressed in the finest of styles. She taught me about traditional roles for women, and a homemaker, and was quite a socialite. She designed and tailored most of her clothes in the finest of styles. We entered her home and sat politely on her white sofa and drank from a teacup. She inspired me to diligently apply myself in my craft and pay attention to details. I wasn’t always the perfect student and my work always needed a bit of a cleanup as I sewed often throughout the house, snacking if I could, but my lessons were well learned.

Om Couture Designs is a tribute to her. She would have appreciated my work today.
